Evonik Active Oxygens devel\u00adoped these processes together with part\u00adners and made them marketable. This requires <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/polyurethane-pur-pu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polyurethane<\/a>. This is a&nbsp;prod\u00aduct made from <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/propylene-oxide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">propy\u00adlene oxide<\/a>. As previ\u00adous propy\u00adlene oxide manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading processes produced large quan\u00adti\u00adties of byprod\u00aducts, some of which were harm\u00adful to the envi\u00adron\u00adment, Evonik Active Oxygens devel\u00adoped an inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading process together with thyssenk\u00adrupp Indus\u00adtrial Solu\u00adtions well over 20&nbsp;years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<strong>H<\/strong>ydro\u00adgen <strong>P<\/strong>erox\u00adide to <strong>P<\/strong>ropy\u00adlene <strong>O<\/strong>xide (HPPO)\u201d process is \u2012 as the name suggests \u2012 a&nbsp;process in which in-demand propy\u00adlene oxide is produced based on hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide (H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub>).<\/p>\n<p>In simpli\u00adfied terms, it works like this: you take 70 percent hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide (H\u2082O\u2082), <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/propene-propylene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">propene<\/a> and other addi\u00adtives. Then you add small quan\u00adti\u00adties of steam and elec\u00adtric\u00adity. The hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide then reacts with the propene \u2014 produc\u00ading propy\u00adlene oxide and, as a&nbsp;byprod\u00aduct, just water, which does no harm to the natural envi\u00adron\u00adment and can be biolog\u00adi\u00adcally purified.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-15 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:16.666%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.666%\"><div data-component=\"ImageWithSubtitleBlock\" data-props=\"{&quot;subtitle&quot;:&quot;Propylene oxide and water are formed from H<sub>2<\\\/sub>O<sub>2<\\\/sub> and propylene in a complex process.&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;\\u00a9 Evonik&quot;,&quot;image&quot;:1321,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;16_9&quot;}\"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-20 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.33%\">\n<p>The key element here is a&nbsp;cata\u00adlyst devel\u00adoped by Evonik specif\u00adi\u00adcally for the HPPO process. This cata\u00adlyst ensures that the yield from the reac\u00adtion is very high. More\u00adover, all the ther\u00admal energy required here is utilized several times over. It is there\u00adfore a&nbsp;very resource-effi\u00adcient process that is constantly being enhanced. Four indus\u00adtrial-scale HPPO plants have already been licensed world\u00adwide by Evonik\/\u200btkIS: the first has been oper\u00adat\u00ading in South Korea since 2008. Two more have been added in China, and one in Hungary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-25 wp-block-columns\" id=\"hppo2\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.33%\" id=\"hppo2\">\n<h5>What is&nbsp;HPPG?<\/h5>\n<p>An in-demand prod\u00aduct simi\u00adlar to polyurethane is <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/propylene-glycol\/\">propy\u00adlene glycol<\/a>, which can replace harm\u00adful addi\u00adtives in skin creams, tooth\u00adpaste and oint\u00adments, for exam\u00adple. But it is also required for antifreeze, plas\u00adtics \u2013 or to give chew\u00ading gum a&nbsp;good texture. To date, propy\u00adlene glycol was produced in a&nbsp;series of steps: first, the precur\u00adsor, propy\u00adlene oxide, was produced, followed by propy\u00adlene glycol as the next step in the process.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.evonik.com\/research-and-innovation\/the-direct-route\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hydro\u00adgen Perox\u00adide to Propy\u00adlene Glycol (HPPG) process<\/a> means this indi\u00adrect route is no longer neces\u00adsary. Under the brand name HYPROSYN\u00ae, Evonik Active Oxygens has devel\u00adoped a&nbsp;process that allows propy\u00adlene glycol to be produced directly from propene and hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide. Here too, a&nbsp;cata\u00adlyst ensures that the two basic substances are converted effi\u00adciently and in an energy-saving way. In coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion with US company Dow, Evonik Active Oxygens is now bring\u00ading HYPROSYN\u00ae to market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-30 wp-block-columns\" id=\"hppo3\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.33%\">\n<h5>Why are these processes sustainable?<\/h5>\n<p>An effi\u00adcient process for produc\u00ading hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide and the HPPO process are required to produce propy\u00adlene oxide sustain\u00adably. Both produc\u00adtion facil\u00adi\u00adties should ideally be located close to each other to reduce trans\u00adporta\u00adtion distances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The HPPO process is effi\u00adcient and sustain\u00adable because&nbsp;\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2026no (envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally harm\u00adful) byprod\u00aducts are produced that have to be disposed of.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 the invest\u00adment costs are lower than for conven\u00adtional propy\u00adlene oxide produc\u00adtion processes.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 raw mate\u00adri\u00adals are used effi\u00adciently and the reac\u00adtion yield is&nbsp;high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-33 wp-block-columns\" id=\"hppo2\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:16.666%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.666%\"><div data-component=\"ImageWithSubtitleBlock\" data-props=\"{&quot;subtitle&quot;:&quot;Other than water, the HPPO process does not generate any byproducts, which would require expensive disposal.&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;\\u00a9 Evonik&quot;,&quot;image&quot;:1322,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;16_9&quot;}\"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-38 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.33%\">\n<p>The same applies to the HPPG process for the produc\u00adtion of propy\u00adlene glycol. Here too, it makes sense for the produc\u00adtion facil\u00adi\u00adties for hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide and propy\u00adlene glycol to be located in close proximity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The HPPG process is sustain\u00adable and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally compat\u00adi\u00adble because&nbsp;\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2026 fewer process steps than in alter\u00adna\u00adtive processes are more cost- and resource-efficient.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 the energy require\u00adment is low and the yield is&nbsp;high.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 conven\u00adtional propy\u00adlene glycol plants can be converted cost-effectively.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 the propy\u00adlene oxide previ\u00adously produced as a&nbsp;precur\u00adsor for propy\u00adlene glycol can be used for alter\u00adna\u00adtive appli\u00adca\u00adtions, for exam\u00adple for further process\u00ading into polyurethane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To make both processes even more sustain\u00adable, Evonik Active Oxygens is not only work\u00ading on contin\u00adu\u00adously improv\u00ading them.
