A&nbsp;new plant complex for manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading high-perfor\u00admance plas\u00adtic, Polyamide 12, is \u201cthe largest capac\u00adity enlarge\u00adment in Evonik\u2019s recent history,\u201d says J\u00f6rg Gissel\u00admann, Head of Envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal Oper\u00ada\u00adtions in Marl. And there\u00adfore, prob\u00ada\u00adbly the largest and most spec\u00adtac\u00adu\u00adlar \u201cnew addi\u00adtion\u201d to the massive chem\u00adi\u00adcal park in the Ruhr region ever. Sections of the plant have been in oper\u00ada\u00adtion since Janu\u00adary 2021, while further expan\u00adsion of manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading capac\u00adity in Marl is now good to&nbsp;go.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-21 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<h5>Pretreat\u00adment of heav\u00adily polluted indus\u00adtrial wastewater<\/h5>\n<p>However, indus\u00adtrial produc\u00adtion also gener\u00adates indus\u00adtrial waste\u00adwater. Normally polluted process water can be puri\u00adfied in a&nbsp;waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment plant. In such plants, a&nbsp;screen first of all removes solids and suspended matter, and then pollu\u00adtants are decom\u00adposed by bacte\u00adria. This is usually the most effec\u00adtive method of treat\u00ading cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnated process water.<\/p>\n<p>But some indus\u00adtrial waste\u00adwater \u2013 espe\u00adcially in the chem\u00adi\u00adcal and phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcal indus\u00adtries \u2013 is heav\u00adily cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnated by organic and inor\u00adganic pollu\u00adtants, such as aromatic compounds, hydro\u00adcar\u00adbons, amines and others. \u201cThis waste\u00adwater can\u2019t be biode\u00adgraded in a&nbsp;waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment plant,\u201d says Philipp Christ, Oper\u00ada\u00adtions Assis\u00adtant at Evonik Active Oxygens. \u201cThe bacte\u00adria are unable to do that job. That is why this waste\u00adwater has to be pretreated, before it is piped into the treat\u00adment plant.\u201d If new waste\u00adwater flows are added to an indus\u00adtrial site, e.g. as a&nbsp;result of a&nbsp;new produc\u00adtion facil\u00adity, it is impor\u00adtant to scru\u00adti\u00adnize&nbsp;them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div data-component=\"QuoteBlock\" data-props=\"{&quot;quote&quot;:&quot;... this wastewater needs to be pretreated before it is channeled into the treatment plant.\\u201d&quot;,&quot;subline&quot;:&quot;Philipp Christ, Operations Assistant at Evonik Active Oxygens&quot;}\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-26 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<p>In the past, heav\u00adily polluted indus\u00adtrial waste\u00adwater was often incin\u00ader\u00adated \u2013 an expen\u00adsive and energy-inten\u00adsive process that nega\u00adtively impacted on the envi\u00adron\u00adment. &nbsp;Alter\u00adna\u00adtive processes were there\u00adfore devel\u00adoped to break up the large, tough-to-degrade mole\u00adcules in the waste\u00adwater to enable them to then be degraded by bacte\u00adria. These are mainly the so-called <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/aop-processes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AOP<\/a> (advanced oxida\u00adtion processes) meth\u00adods, which work on the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/articles\/what-is-hydrogen-peroxide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide<\/a> (H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub>) or ozone. H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub> is a&nbsp;highly effec\u00adtive <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/oxidizing-agent-oxidant-oxidizer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oxidant<\/a> that\u2019s produced and sold by Evonik Active Oxygens. Given that this chem\u00adi\u00adcal decom\u00adposes into water and oxygen during the reac\u00adtion, no harm\u00adful by-prod\u00aducts remain, as with other oxidants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-31 wp-block-columns\" id=\"marl1\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:16.666%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\"><div data-component=\"InfoBoxBlock\" data-props=\"{&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Disposal of industrial wastewater&quot;,&quot;content&quot;:&quot;Wastewater from industrial production is disposed of as efficiently as possible, i.e. it is treated as much as necessary and as little as possible. To achieve this, partial flows are extracted from the aggregate wastewater flow and treated using the appropriate methods in each case. Partial flows of industrial wastewater that cannot be treated using any of the common methods are classed as (aqueous) industrial waste. This has to be incinerated. However, incinerating aqueous waste is not energy-efficient. That is because before the residues it contains can be incinerated, the entire water content must first be evaporated using energy-intensive auxiliary heaters. The resulting aqueous sludge is then incinerated. That is why efforts are being made to reduce this percentage as much as possible. If, on the other hand, nonaqueous industrial waste, e.g. solvents, is incinerated (and not evaporated), energy can then be generated from it \\u2013 i.e. steam, district heating or electricity.&quot;,&quot;image&quot;:0,&quot;link_title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;link&quot;:[]}\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-36 wp-block-columns\" id=\"marl2\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<h5>Hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide is a&nbsp;key compo\u00adnent of the Fenton reaction<\/h5>\n<p>These AOP meth\u00adods involve hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide being catalyzed by addi\u00adtional compo\u00adnents like ultra\u00advi\u00ado\u00adlet light or \u2013 as in the <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/fenton-reaction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fenton reac\u00adtion<\/a> \u2013 iron salts, in order to increase the oxida\u00adtion effect. Combi\u00adna\u00adtions of compo\u00adnents are also an option. Under certain condi\u00adtions, the catalyza\u00adtion of H<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>2<\/sub> results in the forma\u00adtion of so-called hydroxyl radi\u00adcals, which have a&nbsp;very high oxida\u00adtion poten\u00adtial. These break up the complex, tough-to-degrade mole\u00adcules, which then become small, water-solu\u00adble and biodegrad\u00adable. \u201cSo, what remains are small organic frag\u00adments, such as acetic acid or lactic acid, which are then metab\u00ado\u00adlized by the bacte\u00adria in the waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment plant,\u201d Christ explains.<\/p>\n<p>The vari\u00adous AOP meth\u00adods are suit\u00adable for differ\u00adent appli\u00adca\u00adtions. Fenton performs well in sustain\u00adabil\u00adity and cost terms by comparison:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UV light<\/strong> is unsuit\u00adable for turbid waste\u00adwater, because it does not pene\u00adtrate deep enough. Further\u00admore, the lamps consume energy and need to be replaced regularly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ozone<\/strong> is produced at high energy input, it is also expen\u00adsive to procure and the oper\u00ada\u00adtion of ozone gener\u00ada\u00adtors is energy-intensive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fenton<\/strong> plants are expen\u00adsive to install, but they cost signif\u00adi\u00adcantly less to main\u00adtain than the alter\u00adna\u00adtives. Feed\u00adstocks are read\u00adily avail\u00adable and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally compatible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-41 wp-block-columns\" id=\"marl3\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<h5>Evonik and Fenton<\/h5>\n<p>The Fenton reac\u00adtion is not new: it was discov\u00adered way back at the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century by Henry John Horstman Fenton. It has been contin\u00adu\u00adously adapted and refined since then.<\/p>\n<p>Fenton plants are used world\u00adwide, espe\u00adcially in the petro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcals indus\u00adtry and in the manu\u00adfac\u00adture of phar\u00adma\u00adceu\u00adti\u00adcals. Evonik itself is not a&nbsp;provider of Fenton plants, but part\u00adners with manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders. The Group supplies hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide for Fenton plants oper\u00adated by other compa\u00adnies, and has its own plants in Rhein\u00adfelden and more recently in&nbsp;Marl.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, Evonik chemists conduct tests to enhance the processes and adapt them to differ\u00adent waste\u00adwater types \u2013 in collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders too. A&nbsp;few years ago, for exam\u00adple, a&nbsp;team from Active Oxygens succeeded in modi\u00adfy\u00ading the Fenton reac\u00adtion by adjust\u00ading the reac\u00adtion para\u00adme\u00adters to enable it to be used resource-effi\u00adciently in the produc\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen peroxide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><div data-component=\"ImageWithSubtitleBlock\" data-props=\"{&quot;type&quot;:&quot;3_4&quot;,&quot;subtitle&quot;:&quot;Plant complex in Marl&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;\\u00a9 Evonik&quot;,&quot;image&quot;:891}\"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-46 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<h5>Exten\u00adsive data analy\u00adses and series of large-scale tests<\/h5>\n<p>However, the type of waste\u00adwater and its constituents deter\u00admine which AOP method is the most effec\u00adtive. There\u00adfore, only test\u00ading helps. Those respon\u00adsi\u00adble in Marl know this too. They started look\u00ading for the right method to pretreat these addi\u00adtional waste\u00adwater flows. Scien\u00adtists from TU Berlin were also involved in the exten\u00adsive data analy\u00adses and series of large-scale tests. \u201cThe whole thing took a&nbsp;year,\u201d says Gissel\u00admann. \u201cIn the end, we opted for Fenton. Fenton provides the widest cover\u00adage for our appli\u00adca\u00adtions, when you consider envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal as well as tech\u00adni\u00adcal and commer\u00adcial factors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, the Evonik Busi\u00adness Line respon\u00adsi\u00adble \u2013 Energy and Util\u00adi\u00adties \u2013 planned and built a&nbsp;Fenton plant for around 15 million euros, which is expected to require about 2,250 metric tons of hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide a&nbsp;year. The oper\u00ada\u00adtors of the plant will obtain this primar\u00adily from Evonik\u2019s Delfz\u00adijl site in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-51 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<h5>Exper\u00adtise provided by Evonik Active Oxygens<\/h5>\n<p>Those respon\u00adsi\u00adble at Evonik in Marl obtained the neces\u00adsary exper\u00adtise from the hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide experts work\u00ading for the Evonik Active Oxygens Busi\u00adness Line. This Busi\u00adness Line produces and sells hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide in a&nbsp;wide range of concentrations.<\/p>\n<p>Further\u00admore, Evonik Active Oxygens has already been oper\u00adat\u00ading a&nbsp;Fenton plant at the Rhein\u00adfelden site in south\u00adwest\u00adern Baden-W\u00fcrt\u00adtem\u00adberg, near the Swiss border, since the end of 2017. Here, it was a&nbsp;simi\u00adlar story back then: capac\u00adity enlarge\u00adments had resulted in a&nbsp;new type of waste\u00adwater that had to be handled.
