The reasons for growth are global <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/megatrends-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mega\u00adtrends<\/a>, such as grow\u00ading popu\u00adla\u00adtions and increas\u00ading mobil\u00adity, while simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adously attempt\u00ading to increase the energy effi\u00adciency. The qual\u00adity of life in devel\u00adop\u00ading coun\u00adtries, partic\u00adu\u00adlarly in Asia, is increas\u00ading, which is result\u00ading in greater demand for refrig\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtors or air condi\u00adtion\u00ading units with insu\u00adlat\u00ading layers made from polyurethane foams. Corre\u00adspond\u00adingly, the demand for polyurethane foams (PU foams) in high-qual\u00adity furni\u00adture, car seats or partic\u00adu\u00adlarly durable cold-foam mattresses is growing.<\/p>\n<p>As a&nbsp;result, manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00aders around the world are expand\u00ading their produc\u00adtion capac\u00adi\u00adties for polyurethane, as well as for its precur\u00adsors, <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/propylene-oxide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">propy\u00adlene oxide<\/a> and poly\u00adols: \u201cPoly\u00adols are some of the most sought-after petro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal prod\u00aducts today, as they are the start\u00ading mate\u00adri\u00adals for polyurethane, the \u2018Swiss army knife\u2019 of the indus\u00adtry,\u201d says Gy\u00f6rgy Sz\u0171cs, Group Invest\u00adment and Down\u00adstream Strate\u00adgic Projects Direc\u00adtor at the Hungar\u00adian oil, gas, petro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal and retail corpo\u00adra\u00adtion MOL Group. Polyol tech\u00adnol\u00adogy is provided by tklS and the plant modules in the complex were manu\u00adfac\u00adtured in Thai\u00adland trans\u00adported to Hungary by ship and then put together at the site, just like a&nbsp;huge LEGO set. The complex, which has been built on MOL Petro\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcals site, is intended to begin oper\u00ada\u00adtions in 2022 and convert 200,000 tons of propy\u00adlene oxide into poly\u00adols and propy\u00adlene glycols each&nbsp;year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-42 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<h5>Devel\u00adop\u00adment of new polyol grades<\/h5>\n<p>In addi\u00adtion, MOL opened a&nbsp;new research and devel\u00adop\u00adment centre for poly\u00adols in Sz\u00e1zhalom\u00adbatta, about 200 kilo\u00adme\u00adtres away from Tisza\u00ad\u00fajv\u00e1ros. The centre will conduct tests of the physic\u00ado\u00adchem\u00adi\u00adcal prop\u00ader\u00adties of poly\u00adols, as well as labo\u00adra\u00adtory tests and appli\u00adca\u00adtion trials of polyurethane foams made from them. By July 2022, at least 10 polyol grades will be devel\u00adoped in the newly built facility.<\/p>\n<p>The company also plans to coop\u00ader\u00adate with the labo\u00adra\u00adto\u00adries of several Hungar\u00adian univer\u00adsi\u00adties and inde\u00adpen\u00addent research insti\u00adtu\u00adtions. These collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtions should help to further develop the method\u00adolo\u00adgies used in the polyol R&amp;D centre and expand the univer\u00adsi\u00adties\u2019 knowl\u00adedge&nbsp;base.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-47 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\" id=\"mol2\">\n<h5>The HPPO process: effi\u00adcient and sustainable<\/h5>\n<p>A&nbsp;signif\u00adi\u00adcant part of the produc\u00adtion process at MOL is the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/articles\/what-is-hppo-hppg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hydro\u00adgen Perox\u00adide to Propy\u00adlene Oxide (HPPO)<\/a>\u201d process, devel\u00adoped together by Evonik Active Oxygens and thyssenk\u00adrupp Indus\u00adtrial Solu\u00adtions. The process uses <a href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/articles\/what-is-hydrogen-peroxide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide<\/a> (H\u2082O\u2082) with a&nbsp;specific qual\u00adity level to oxidize propene to PO, at a&nbsp;compa\u00adra\u00adbly low steam and elec\u00adtric\u00adity demand. The main reac\u00adtion prod\u00aducts are propy\u00adlene oxide and water that can be biolog\u00adi\u00adcally purified.<\/p>\n<p>A cata\u00adlyst devel\u00adoped by Evonik for the HPPO process is at the core of this method. The cata\u00adlyst ensures that propene is converted to propy\u00adlene oxide at high conver\u00adsion and selec\u00adtiv\u00adity \u2013 and there are no other appre\u00adcia\u00adble by-prod\u00aducts. The analy\u00adses are based on accepted assess\u00adment approaches for <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/co2-equivalent-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CO<sub>2<\/sub>-equiv\u00ada\u00adlent emis\u00adsions<\/a> at differ\u00adent prod\u00aduct manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading phases (\u201ccradle-to-gate\u201d assess\u00adment). After all: \u201cThe smaller the \u2018CO<sub>2<\/sub> back\u00adpack\u2019 of these mate\u00adri\u00adals, the lower the total CO<sub>2<\/sub> baggage of the propy\u00adlene oxide,\u201d says Kuehner.<\/p>\n<p>However, the possi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties of reduc\u00ading CO<sub>2<\/sub> emis\u00adsions are by no means exhausted. \u201cThere are numer\u00adous efforts to estab\u00adlish other processes to derive propene from sustain\u00adable sources, such as bio-based raw mate\u00adri\u00adals or on the basis of used cook\u00ading fat or agri\u00adcul\u00adtural waste,\u201d explains the expert. Evonik AO has already converted its plants vari\u00adous regions to run on green elec\u00adtric\u00adity that is used as effi\u00adciently as possi\u00adble.
