This makes waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment in these areas a&nbsp;partic\u00adu\u00adlar chal\u00adlenge, and conven\u00adtional disin\u00adfec\u00adtion plants are not up to the task. To this end, the city of Memphis chose to deploy an alter\u00adna\u00adtive tech\u00adnol\u00adogy based on peracetic acid several years ago. Elvis Pres\u00adley or Johnny Cash? Pleas\u00adant-tast\u00ading tap water is prob\u00ada\u00adbly not one of the first things you asso\u00adciate with the city on the Missis\u00adsippi in south-west Tennessee. However, Memphis\u2019 drink\u00ading water is of partic\u00adu\u00adlarly high qual\u00adity. This is due to the natural reser\u00advoirs located hundreds of meters below the Earth\u2019s surface, sand\u00adwiched between layers of clay and sand. This sand acts as a&nbsp;natural filter and helps remove contaminations.<\/p>\n<p>However, the water qual\u00adity in the nearby Missis\u00adsippi river is far lower. Indus\u00adtrial waste\u00adwater gener\u00adated during agri\u00adcul\u00adtural processes and cotton process\u00ading is fed into the river, thus posing a&nbsp;big chal\u00adlenge for the Memphis waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment plant. This waste\u00adwater contains large quan\u00adti\u00adties of organic waste that is discharged into the river and turns it a&nbsp;cloudy broth of coffee-brown color.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-19 wp-block-columns\" id=\"memphis1\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<p>As such, conven\u00adtional treat\u00adment tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies cannot simply be deployed for this water. For exam\u00adple, the water color is too dark for UV tech\u00adnol\u00adogy to be used to disin\u00adfect it. Chem\u00adi\u00adcals contain\u00ading chlo\u00adrine or ozone are also unsuit\u00adable for disin\u00adfect\u00ading this water, as the organic compounds simply absorb large quan\u00adti\u00adties of these chem\u00adi\u00adcals \u2013 mean\u00ading that extreme concen\u00adtra\u00adtions would have to be used in order to achieve the desired results. The key part of the process was the construc\u00adtion of a&nbsp;produc\u00adtion plant for <a href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/artikel\/what-is-peracetic-acid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peracetic acid (PAA)<\/a> on leased land next to the waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment plant. This enables the disin\u00adfec\u00adtant agent to be manu\u00adfac\u00adtured in direct prox\u00adim\u00adity to the waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment plant and fed into it via a&nbsp;special dosing system.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to conven\u00adtional disin\u00adfec\u00adtion meth\u00adods, using a&nbsp;peracetic acid solu\u00adtion has many advan\u00adtages. For exam\u00adple, the fact that PAA decom\u00adposes into oxygen, water and vine\u00adgar when used and thus does not repre\u00adsent a&nbsp;hazard to human health or the envi\u00adron\u00adment \u2013 unlike agents contain\u00ading chlo\u00adrine. And it is also cost-effi\u00adcient in deployment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div data-component=\"QuoteBlock\" data-props=\"{&quot;quote&quot;:&quot;We only need around one sixth of the amount of peracetic acid compared to agents containing chlorine for this wastewater.\\u201d&quot;,&quot;subline&quot;:&quot;Philip Block, Technology Director Specialty Market and Water Treatment at Evonik Active Oxygens&quot;}\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-32 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<p>\u201cThe bene\u00adfit of peracetic acid compared to other conven\u00adtional meth\u00adods is that a&nbsp;signif\u00adi\u00adcantly smaller amount is required to disin\u00adfect the water,\u201d explains Philip Block, Tech\u00adnol\u00adogy Direc\u00adtor Specialty Market and Water Treat\u00adment at Evonik Active Oxygens. \u201cAs a&nbsp;result, we only need around one sixth of the amount of peracetic acid compared to agents contain\u00ading chlo\u00adrine for this wastewater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PAA plant in Memphis uses the VIGOROX\u00ae WWT II prod\u00aduct line from Evonik Active Oxygens. \u201cThe fact we were able to convince the city of our prod\u00aduct and all the asso\u00adci\u00adated services is a&nbsp;huge success for us as a&nbsp;producer of PAA with <a class=\"hotspot\" href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/glossar\/sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustain\u00adabil\u00adity<\/a> in mind,\u201d says Block. \u201cAlthough we only use PAA in small and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally compat\u00adi\u00adble concen\u00adtra\u00adtions, we still need around 30 million pounds (just less than 14,000 metric tons) of the prod\u00aduct each year to supply the treat\u00adment plant in Memphis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-37 wp-block-columns\" id=\"memphis3\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.33%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\">\n<h5>Ecolog\u00adi\u00adcally and econom\u00adi\u00adcally sustainable<\/h5>\n<p>Memphis is also bene\u00adfit\u00ading from the sustain\u00adable nature of the coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion, both from an ecolog\u00adi\u00adcal and an economic standpoint.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The PAA dosing system&nbsp;\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2026 is inte\u00adgrated into the Memphis waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment process and contributes to clean\u00ading the wastewater.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 provides reli\u00adable disin\u00adfec\u00adtion and is effec\u00adtive against E. coli and other fecal bacte\u00adria, even in low&nbsp;doses.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 is more cost-effi\u00adcient than conven\u00adtional tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies (e.g., UV or chlo\u00adrine-based procedures).<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 has very short trans\u00adporta\u00adtion routes due to the direct prox\u00adim\u00adity of the PAA produc\u00adtion plant and the waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment&nbsp;plant.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 creates new jobs in Memphis, as staff are required to oper\u00adate the PAA produc\u00adtion&nbsp;plant.<\/li>\n<li>\u2026 is an addi\u00adtional source of income for Memphis from the lease and commissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Follow\u00ading a&nbsp;devel\u00adop\u00adment and construc\u00adtion phase last\u00ading nine years, includ\u00ading compre\u00adhen\u00adsive labo\u00adra\u00adtory and field tests, the plant has been up and running as a&nbsp;fully commer\u00adcial oper\u00ada\u00adtion since the end of 2019.
