From indus\u00adtrial age to green revolution<\/h1>\n

At Stock\u00adholm Royal Seaport, a new, sustain\u00adable neigh\u00adbor\u00adhood is being built on an indus\u00adtrial site. But first, the cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnated soil is being reme\u00addi\u00adated with KLOZUR\u00ae persul\u00adfates so that future resi\u00addents can live here in good health.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

V<\/span>iewed from above, the city of Stock\u00adholm seems to shim\u00admer: Bright archi\u00adtec\u00adture, green parks, and a network of bridges are densely clus\u00adtered around wide chan\u00adnels of the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n

These water\u00adways have been inte\u00adgral over the years to Stockholm\u2019s devel\u00adop\u00adment into one of Europe\u2019s lead\u00ading cultural and commer\u00adcial centers. Yet the geog\u00adra\u00adphy is not with\u00adout its drawbacks.<\/p>\n

Lack of space is a major contrib\u00adu\u00adtor to the current hous\u00ading crunch in Sweden\u2019s capi\u00adtal, a coun\u00adtry where nearly 90% of the popu\u00adla\u00adtion lives in cities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A role model for green urban development<\/h5>\n

That is why the City of Stock\u00adholm has under\u00adtaken a massive rede\u00advel\u00adop\u00adment of its histor\u00adi\u00adcal Royal Seaport district.<\/p>\n

The Stock\u00adholm Royal Seaport was once the site of a sprawl\u00ading manu\u00adfac\u00adtured gas plant (MGP) and a main harbor for coal trans\u00adport. Now, this area is poised to become an inter\u00adna\u00adtional role model for green urban living. When construc\u00adtion is complete in 2030, at least 12,000 new homes and 35,000 work\u00adplaces will be powered by renew\u00adable energy and connected by public trans\u00adport and walk\u00ading or cycling paths.<\/p>\n

Circu\u00adlar waste manage\u00adment and an inte\u00adgrated commer\u00adcial and resi\u00adden\u00adtial concept aim to ensure self-suffi\u00adciency and a mini\u00admal envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal foot\u00adprint<\/a>. Desig\u00adnated space for urban garden\u00ading, an acces\u00adsi\u00adble shore\u00adline, and repur\u00adposed indus\u00adtrial build\u00adings will trans\u00adform the Stock\u00adholm Royal Seaport from an aban\u00addoned remnant of the city\u2019s coal age into an attrac\u00adtive and highly sustain\u00adable<\/a> new neighborhood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Start\u00ading with a clean foundation<\/h5>\n

But first there is work to be done. Once the main source of power for indus\u00adtri\u00adal\u00adiz\u00ading commu\u00adni\u00adties at the end of the 19th century, MGPs have left consid\u00ader\u00adable organic and inor\u00adganic cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnants in the loca\u00adtion where they oper\u00adated. Over time, these residues release emis\u00adsions through soil vapors that can pose a health threat to people living in the area. Thor\u00adough soil reme\u00addi\u00ada\u00adtion must take place before any build\u00ading can begin.<\/p>\n

This is where persul\u00adfates<\/a> come into play. Sodium and potas\u00adsium persul\u00adfates are power\u00adful oxidants<\/a> \u2014 in other words, they rapidly degrade harm\u00adful compounds into noth\u00ading but benign basic compo\u00adnents, like oxygen and carbon. The KLOZUR\u00ae SP-brand envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal grade sodium persul\u00adfate produced by Evonik Active Oxygens has been formu\u00adlated to treat a wide range of cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnants, includ\u00ading the coal tar and naph\u00adtha\u00adlene commonly left behind by MGPs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne common way to restore cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnated sites is simply to dig up the impacted soil and trans\u00adport it away. But that just moves the prob\u00adlem some\u00adwhere else and causes traf\u00adfic from heavy-load trans\u00adport,\u201d points out Josephine Molin, a Stock\u00adholm native and Tech\u00adnol\u00adogy Appli\u00adca\u00adtions Manager for soil and ground\u00adwa\u00adter reme\u00addi\u00ada\u00adtion at Evonik Active Oxygens. \u201cOn-site treat\u00adment is a more respon\u00adsi\u00adble approach. Using prod\u00aducts like KLOZUR\u00ae SP actu\u00adally elim\u00adi\u00adnates the cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion right in place \u2014 or \u2018in situ,\u2019 as we say in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the Stock\u00adholm Royal Seaport, the city decided on a method that combined soil stabi\u00adliza\u00adtion with cement binders and cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnant destruc\u00adtion using persul\u00adfate. The less-perme\u00adable clay layer will be mixed with persul\u00adfates and binders to essen\u00adtially seal away harm\u00adful substances through a combi\u00adna\u00adtion of oxida\u00adtion and immo\u00adbi\u00adliza\u00adtion. Mean\u00adwhile, the more perme\u00adable soil layers will be injected with persul\u00adfate solu\u00adtion in order to completely break down the harm\u00adful substances.<\/p>\n

The full treat\u00adment with KLOZUR\u00ae SP is expected to be completed by 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ready for the future<\/h5>\n

Persul\u00adfates are not only effec\u00adtive at clean\u00ading up the residues of the past; they also have a role to play in build\u00ading a sustain\u00adable future.<\/p>\n

For one thing, persul\u00adfates are produced through elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis, a process that requires a lot of elec\u00adtric\u00adity. The elec\u00adtric\u00adity for Evonik\u2019s persul\u00adfate produc\u00adtion is gener\u00adated by hydro\u00adelec\u00adtric power \u2014 an emis\u00adsion-free power source.<\/p>\n

For another, persul\u00adfates enable in-situ reme\u00addi\u00ada\u00adtion that allows for safe reuse of the site while keep\u00ading it funda\u00admen\u00adtally intact. There is no need to trans\u00adport the cont\u00ada\u00adm\u00adi\u00adnated soil away in heavy trucks, which prevents emis\u00adsions and is less disrup\u00adtive to the surround\u00ading community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis kind of treat\u00adment harmo\u00adnizes with the reduce-reuse-recy\u00adcle approach of the whole Stock\u00adholm Royal Seaport project,\u201d says Josephine Molin. \u201cThe plant was once a major source of power for the city and impor\u00adtant for its devel\u00adop\u00adment. Today, we have the knowl\u00adedge to move beyond fossil fuel, but this site and its infra\u00adstruc\u00adture will still contribute to power\u00ading a new, greener development.\u201d<\/p>\n

Molin smiles, \u201cI rather like that the big old brick build\u00adings of the Stock\u00adholm Royal Seaport are being repur\u00adposed into cultural centers. We are setting the stage for the future by build\u00ading on the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
