Four decades of renew\u00adable resources<\/span><\/h1>\n

Evonik\u2019s Active Oxygens busi\u00adness line has been sourc\u00ading biobased acetic acid for its peracetic acid produc\u00adtion in Europe since 1983.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

O<\/span>n May 4, 1983, a tank car left the produc\u00adtion site of Lenz\u00ading AG in Lenz\u00ading, Austria, bound for Evonik\u2019s facil\u00adity in Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein, just over 200 kilo\u00adme\u00adters away.<\/p>\n

The cargo: biobased acetic acid. Acetic acid is a main ingre\u00addi\u00adent in peracetic acid<\/a>, a versa\u00adtile indus\u00adtrial substance produced and sold by Evonik\u2019s Active Oxygens busi\u00adness line for a vari\u00adety of chem\u00adi\u00adcal and disin\u00adfec\u00adtion applications.<\/p>\n

The other main ingre\u00addi\u00adent in peracetic acid is hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide<\/a> \u2014 also produced and sold by Evonik Active Oxygens. In fact, the Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein plant is where the first indus\u00adtrial produc\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide began in 1908; even today, the elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis-based tech\u00adnol\u00adogy is called \u201cthe Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein process.\u201d<\/p>\n

But on May 4, 1983, a differ\u00adent history was in the making. For that partic\u00adu\u00adlar tank car was filled with LENZ\u00adING\u2122 Acetic Acid biobased, produced for the first time by <\/span>Lenz\u00ading<\/a><\/span> Group entirely from renew\u00adable raw mate\u00adri\u00adals. And Evonik was the first customer for this biore\u00adfin\u00adery prod\u00aduct. It was the begin\u00adning of a decades-long part\u00adner\u00adship between Evonik and Lenz\u00ading for the supply of this key ingre\u00addi\u00adent, which contin\u00adues to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What is biobased acetic acid?<\/span><\/h5>\n

Acetic acid, also called ethanoic acid, is an organic compound that is best known as the main compo\u00adnent in vine\u00adgar. It is also a natural compo\u00adnent of hard\u00adwood. As Lenz\u00ading Group uses wood as a renew\u00adable raw mate\u00adr\u00adial in its produc\u00adtion of specialty fibers, LENZ\u00adING\u2122 Acetic Acid biobased results as a biore\u00adfin\u00adery prod\u00aduct from extract\u00ading pulp. The carbon foot\u00adprint of this prod\u00aduct is more than 85% lower than that of fossil-based acetic acid.<\/p>\n

In fact, LENZ\u00adING\u2122 Acetic Acid biobased is of such high qual\u00adity that it is USDA certi\u00adfied as a food-grade prod\u00aduct. The wood Lenz\u00ading purchases as a raw mate\u00adr\u00adial is certi\u00adfied accord\u00ading to recog\u00adnized sustain\u00adabil\u00adity crite\u00adria, such as the FSC\u00ae and PEFC stan\u00addards. And more than half of comes from Austrian forests, with another portion coming from other Euro\u00adpean countries. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The product\u2019s high qual\u00adity and renew\u00adable source thus made it attrac\u00adtive as a raw mate\u00adr\u00adial for Evonik\u2019s main peracetic acid produc\u00adtion facil\u00adity in Europe: Evonik Peroxid GmbH in Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein (at the time under Evonik\u2019s prede\u00adces\u00adsor company, Degussa, and today a part of Evonik\u2019s Active Oxygens busi\u00adness line). The geograph\u00adi\u00adcal prox\u00adim\u00adity between the two Austrian sites also made the supply both prac\u00adti\u00adcal and envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally benign, espe\u00adcially as deliv\u00ader\u00adies are always carried out by rail\u00adcar \u2014 a more sustain\u00adable option than truck transport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Team\u00ading up to advance sustain\u00adable industry<\/span><\/h5>\n

Evonik and Lenz\u00ading knew they were onto some\u00adthing when the first biobased acetic acid was deliv\u00adered in 1983. Over the last 40 years, the part\u00adner\u00adship has taken on an effi\u00adcient circu\u00adlar\u00adity: Evonik uses LENZ\u00adING\u2122 Acetic Acid biobased to produce peracetic acid, and Lenz\u00ading uses Evonik\u2019s peracetic acid for their lyocell production.<\/p>\n

Peracetic acid<\/a> is not only a power\u00adful oxidiz\u00ading agent that can kill bacte\u00adria, fungi, and viruses at low concen\u00adtra\u00adtions and at low temper\u00ada\u00adtures. It also only leaves acetic acid as a by-prod\u00aduct when consumed. Residues of peracetic acid quickly decom\u00adpose into water, oxygen, and acetic acid. The use of peracetic acid in manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading processes is there\u00adfore an effi\u00adcient and more envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally compat\u00adi\u00adble option than other indus\u00adtrial chemicals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What is more, Evonik Active Oxygens is pursu\u00ading a concrete road map toward climate neutral\u00adity<\/a> at all its produc\u00adtion sites \u2014 includ\u00ading Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein \u2014 by 2040. The Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein site is already well on its way: Evonik Peroxid GmbH has been sourc\u00ading the great major\u00adity of its elec\u00adtric\u00adity from renew\u00adable resources since 2021.<\/p>\n

The syner\u00adgies go beyond prod\u00aducts. Lenzing\u2019s site is also one of the loca\u00adtions of Evonik Fibres GmbH<\/a>, where its poly\u00adimide chem\u00adistry is produced. Based on this chem\u00adistry, Evonik Fibres special\u00adizes in high-temper\u00ada\u00adture resis\u00adtant powders, fibers, and membranes for a vari\u00adety of envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal appli\u00adca\u00adtions \u2014 from hot gas filtra\u00adtion to the biogas sepa\u00adra\u00adtion neces\u00adsary to produce biofu\u00adels. In fact, the inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive prod\u00aducts and tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies offered by Evonik Fibres GmbH have been partic\u00adu\u00adlarly awarded<\/a> for the CO2<\/sub><\/a>-saving poten\u00adtial in their application.<\/p>\n

Exper\u00adtise is a shared resource, too: New employ\u00adees at Evonik Fibres GmbH and Evonik Peroxid GmbH attend train\u00ading sessions at Lenz\u00ading AG as part of their compre\u00adhen\u00adsive appren\u00adtice\u00adship programs.<\/p>\n

Evonik Peroxid\u2019s Manag\u00ading Direc\u00adtor, Dr. Josef Miklautsch, visited Lenz\u00ading together with Evonik repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives on May 4, 2023 \u2014 exactly 40 years after the first deliv\u00adery of biobased acetic acid \u2014 to honor the part\u00adners\u2019 long collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion for sustain\u00adable<\/a> indus\u00adtry. \u201cPrior\u00adi\u00adtiz\u00ading sustain\u00adable processes and utiliz\u00ading renew\u00adable raw mate\u00adri\u00adals simply makes good busi\u00adness sense,\u201d he said. \u201cFour decades years of success\u00adful collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion have shown that. And although effi\u00adciency and supply secu\u00adrity may have been the deci\u00adsive factors in 1983, today, we are even more keenly aware that resources are finite.
