Acetic acid is a&nbsp;main ingre\u00addi\u00adent in <a href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/articles\/what-is-peracetic-acid\/\">peracetic acid<\/a>, a&nbsp;versa\u00adtile indus\u00adtrial substance produced and sold by Evonik\u2019s Active Oxygens busi\u00adness line for a&nbsp;vari\u00adety of chem\u00adi\u00adcal and disin\u00adfec\u00adtion applications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other main ingre\u00addi\u00adent in peracetic acid is <a href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/articles\/what-is-hydrogen-peroxide\/\">hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide<\/a> \u2014 also produced and sold by Evonik Active Oxygens. In fact, the Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein plant is where the first indus\u00adtrial produc\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide began in 1908; even today, the elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis-based tech\u00adnol\u00adogy is called \u201cthe Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But on May 4, 1983, a&nbsp;differ\u00adent history was in the making. For that partic\u00adu\u00adlar tank car was filled with LENZ\u00adING\u2122 Acetic Acid biobased, produced for the first time by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lenzing.com\/\">Lenz\u00ading<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Group entirely from renew\u00adable raw mate\u00adri\u00adals. And Evonik was the first customer for this biore\u00adfin\u00adery prod\u00aduct. It was the begin\u00adning of a&nbsp;decades-long part\u00adner\u00adship between Evonik and Lenz\u00ading for the supply of this key ingre\u00addi\u00adent, which contin\u00adues to this&nbsp;day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flex wp-container-19 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:8.333%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-flow wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:58.333%\" id=\"biobased-acetic-acid\">\n<h5><span lang=\"EN-US\">What is biobased acetic acid?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetic acid, also called ethanoic acid, is an organic compound that is best known as the main compo\u00adnent in vine\u00adgar. It is also a&nbsp;natural compo\u00adnent of hard\u00adwood. As Lenz\u00ading Group uses wood as a&nbsp;renew\u00adable raw mate\u00adr\u00adial in its produc\u00adtion of specialty fibers, LENZ\u00adING\u2122 Acetic Acid biobased results as a&nbsp;biore\u00adfin\u00adery prod\u00aduct from extract\u00ading pulp. The carbon foot\u00adprint of this prod\u00aduct is more than 85% lower than that of fossil-based acetic acid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, LENZ\u00adING\u2122 Acetic Acid biobased is of such high qual\u00adity that it is USDA certi\u00adfied as a&nbsp;food-grade prod\u00aduct. The wood Lenz\u00ading purchases as a&nbsp;raw mate\u00adr\u00adial is certi\u00adfied accord\u00ading to recog\u00adnized sustain\u00adabil\u00adity crite\u00adria, such as the FSC\u00ae and PEFC stan\u00addards. Over the last 40&nbsp;years, the part\u00adner\u00adship has taken on an effi\u00adcient circu\u00adlar\u00adity: Evonik uses LENZ\u00adING\u2122 Acetic Acid biobased to produce peracetic acid, and Lenz\u00ading uses Evonik\u2019s peracetic acid for their lyocell production.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/active-oxygens-sustainability.evonik.com\/en\/articles\/what-is-peracetic-acid\/\">Peracetic acid<\/a>&nbsp;is not only a&nbsp;power\u00adful oxidiz\u00ading agent that can kill bacte\u00adria, fungi, and viruses at low concen\u00adtra\u00adtions and at low temper\u00ada\u00adtures. It also only leaves acetic acid as a&nbsp;by-prod\u00aduct when consumed. Residues of peracetic acid quickly decom\u00adpose into water, oxygen, and acetic acid. The Wei\u00dfen\u00adstein site is already well on its way: Evonik Peroxid GmbH has been sourc\u00ading the great major\u00adity of its elec\u00adtric\u00adity from renew\u00adable resources since 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The syner\u00adgies go beyond prod\u00aducts. Lenzing\u2019s site is also one of the loca\u00adtions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.p84.com\/en\/footer-en\/about-us\">Evonik Fibres GmbH<\/a>, where its poly\u00adimide chem\u00adistry is produced. Based on this chem\u00adistry, Evonik Fibres special\u00adizes in high-temper\u00ada\u00adture resis\u00adtant powders, fibers, and membranes for a&nbsp;vari\u00adety of envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal appli\u00adca\u00adtions \u2014 from hot gas filtra\u00adtion to the biogas sepa\u00adra\u00adtion neces\u00adsary to produce biofu\u00adels.
