Even in an increas\u00adingly digi\u00adtal age, paper is still a part of life \u2013 whether by mail, maga\u00adzines, and flyers, or as labels stick\u00ading to bottles and cans. Stein\u00adbeis Papier GmbH is Europe\u2019s market leader for graphic recy\u00adcled paper. And in Evonik Active Oxygens, Stein\u00adbeis Papier has found a part\u00adner that supports its own high sustain\u00adabil\u00adity standards.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A<\/span>s a company, Stein\u00adbeis Papier dates back to 1863. Yet it was around 50 years ago that the tradi\u00adtional paper manu\u00adfac\u00adturer took a deci\u00adsive turn in its history. In 1976, the company decided that its site in Gl\u00fcck\u00adstadt near Hamburg would produce exclu\u00adsively from 100% recy\u00adcled paper \u2014 a bold deci\u00adsion at a time when terms like recy\u00adcling and sustain\u00adabil\u00adity<\/a> were not yet main\u00adstream. Today, this deci\u00adsion is paying off: Nearly 300,000 tons of recy\u00adcled paper left the factory gates in 2023 with\u00adout the need to cut down a single new tree.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sustain\u00adabil\u00adity Deeply Rooted in the Company\u2019s DNA<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cReThink\u00ading Paper\u201d is the motto of the sustain\u00adabil\u00adity pioneer. \u201cWe place more value on actions than on words, though,\u201d points out Market\u00ading Direc\u00adtor Veronika Warm\u00aders. \u201cThe slogan \u2018ReThink\u00ading Paper\u2019 describes our self-iden\u00adtity, empha\u00adsiz\u00ading that the first step towards more sustain\u00adabil\u00adity is the abil\u00adity to think in new direc\u00adtions. Because if it\u2019s not sustain\u00adable, we don\u2019t do it!\u201d This approach is imple\u00admented consis\u00adtently: The company sources its used paper from a radius of around 250 kilo\u00adme\u00adters. For larger customers, Stein\u00adbeis Papier even picks up the waste paper itself. Where possi\u00adble, exports to Euro\u00adpean customers are handled intermodally.<\/p>\n

Stein\u00adbeis Papier oper\u00adates one of the most modern recy\u00adcling plants in Europe. The surface water required for produc\u00adtion is taken from the local Elbe River. After being cleaned, it is then used as indus\u00adtrial water for the entire manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading process. Inter\u00adnal water treat\u00adment cycles enable multi\u00adple uses before it is returned to the Elbe via the company\u2019s own fully biolog\u00adi\u00adcal waste\u00adwater treat\u00adment plant. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to waste a single drop,\u201d empha\u00adsizes Veronika Warm\u00aders. \u201cResid\u00adual mate\u00adri\u00adals left over from produc\u00adtion are prepared as substi\u00adtute fuels for our power plant.\u201d This waste then supplies all the ther\u00admal energy needed for the produc\u00adtion process, and combined heat and power gener\u00ada\u00adtion covers about half of the addi\u00adtional elec\u00adtric\u00adity needed. The result is an energy-effi\u00adcient, low-emis\u00adsion, and resource-conserv\u00ading indus\u00adtrial oper\u00ada\u00adtion that saves 73 percent of energy and 79 percent of water compared to compa\u00adra\u00adble virgin fiber produc\u00adtion. These efforts have been recog\u00adnized: Stein\u00adbeis Papier received the German Sustain\u00adabil\u00adity Award in both 2008 and 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

An Envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally Friendly Bleach\u00ading Agent<\/strong><\/h5>\n

\u201cWe want our prod\u00aducts to contribute to posi\u00adtive change,\u201d says Veronika Warm\u00aders. \u201cThat\u2019s why, just like in nature, we think of every\u00adthing in cycles.\u201d All Stein\u00adbeis-produced recy\u00adcled papers have received the \u201cBlue Angel\u201d eco-label and are fully compa\u00adra\u00adble to the non-recy\u00adcled kind. With their high degree of white\u00adness, the prod\u00aducts are even visu\u00adally indis\u00adtin\u00adguish\u00adable from virgin-fiber papers.<\/p>\n

In addi\u00adtion to the clas\u00adsic print\u00ading and copy\u00ading papers, the range includes maga\u00adzine papers for offset print\u00ading and digi\u00adtal print\u00ading. Recently, Stein\u00adbeis Papier has also been distrib\u00adut\u00ading wet-strength and non-wet-strength label papers made from 100% recy\u00adcled paper. These are used on bottles, jars, and cans on super\u00admar\u00adket shelves.<\/p>\n

Produc\u00adtion needs more than just recy\u00adcled paper and water, however. Chem\u00adi\u00adcals are also neces\u00adsary. Sodium hydrox\u00adide, for exam\u00adple, helps to detach the print\u00ading ink from the recy\u00adcled paper. Hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide reduces the yellow\u00ading effect caused by sodium hydrox\u00adide and ensures that recy\u00adcled paper comes out bright white. \u201cThe advan\u00adtage of hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide is that it is an envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtally friendly bleach\u00ading agent,\u201d says Stein\u00adbeis Prod\u00aduct Manager Andreas Steen\u00adbock. He is also respon\u00adsi\u00adble for qual\u00adity in produc\u00adtion and handles sustain\u00adabil\u00adity topics. \u201cHydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide meets all the require\u00adments of the \u2018Blue Angel\u2019 eco-label, as it ulti\u00admately decom\u00adposes into water and oxygen.\u201d The chem\u00adi\u00adcal thus leaves very little impact on the environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Win-Win Situ\u00ada\u00adtion Through Sustain\u00adabil\u00adity Certificates<\/strong><\/h5>\n

As customer demand for whiter recy\u00adcled paper contin\u00adues to rise, so does the use of hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide in produc\u00adtion. \u201cCurrently, we purchase around 4,000 tons of hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide per year,\u201d says Andreas Steenbock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

One supplier is Evonik, whose Active Oxygens busi\u00adness line is pursu\u00ading a sustain\u00adabil\u00adity strat\u00adegy<\/a> of its own. By follow\u00ading its \u201cWay to GO2<\/sub>\u201d roadmap, the perox\u00adide special\u00adist aims to progres\u00adsively switch its produc\u00adtion to more sustain\u00adable sources, such as renew\u00adable energy and green hydro\u00adgen. This trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion is already in full swing at several of the busi\u00adness line\u2019s 20 global produc\u00adtion sites. As a result, the produc\u00adtion of hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide is becom\u00ading increas\u00adingly sustain\u00adable as the asso\u00adci\u00adated CO2<\/sub> emis\u00adsions are reduced. By 2040, all Active Oxygens produc\u00adtion plants world\u00adwide are expected to run in a climate-neutral<\/a> manner.<\/p>\n

The progress of this trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion is reflected posi\u00adtively in the ongo\u00ading calcu\u00adla\u00adtion of the prod\u00aduct carbon foot\u00adprint<\/a>. Evonik Active Oxygens can pass these bene\u00adfits on to its customers through a \u201cbook-and-claim\u201d mech\u00ada\u00adnism \u2013 a process that has been audited, moni\u00adtored, and certi\u00adfied by rigor\u00adous test\u00ading expert T\u00dcV Rhein\u00adland. The result: Evonik Active Oxygens can already label the green portion of its port\u00adfo\u00adlio with \u201cWay to GO2<\/sub>\u201d sustain\u00adabil\u00adity certifi\u00adcates<\/a> and offer these for purchase.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2<\\\/sub>\\" Sustainability Certificate","content":"Evonik Active Oxygens is pursuing an ambitious transformation roadmap to switch its production to climate-neutral sources. As the transformation progresses, the business line\\u2019s CO2<\\\/sub> footprint becomes smaller. A certain portion of the portfolio can already be assigned sustainability certificates today, which are passed on to customers through a \\"book-and-claim\\" mechanism. T\\u00dcV Rheinland has rigorously audited and certified the mechanism and the calculation. On this basis, Evonik Active Oxygens is able to sell hydrogen peroxide together with a \\"Way to GO2<\\\/sub>\\" certificate. Ulti\u00admately, the certifi\u00adcates enable a win-win situ\u00ada\u00adtion. \u201cWhile we can use the revenue from the certifi\u00adcate sales to initi\u00adate further sustain\u00adabil\u00adity measures, buyers continue to receive hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide of the usual qual\u00adity while cred\u00adit\u00ading the certifi\u00adcates towards their own sustain\u00adabil\u00adity efforts,\u201d explains Christoph Batz-Sohn, Direc\u00adtor of Sustain\u00adable Trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion at Evonik Active Oxygens.<\/p>\n

Stein\u00adbeis Papier was happy to take up this option. After all, the paper special\u00adist is already vigor\u00adously trans\u00adform\u00ading the part of its produc\u00adtion that is within its own sphere of influ\u00adence. However, for the Scope 3 emis\u00adsions that stem from further upstream in the supply chain, the company relies on coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion with its suppli\u00aders. This is where the Evonik certifi\u00adcates come into play. \u201cFor us, it was crucial that our contacts at Evonik Active Oxygens under\u00adstand and share our atti\u00adtude towards sustain\u00adabil\u00adity. Only then can we create added value together that goes beyond the mere deliv\u00adery of hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide,\u201d says Market\u00ading Manager Veronika Warmers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Reduced Scope 3 Emissions<\/strong><\/h5>\n

In 2024, Stein\u00adbeis Papier will purchase 2,000 tons of \u201cWay to GO2<\/sub>\u201d-certi\u00adfied hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide from Evonik Active Oxygens. \u201cThis enables us to reduce our Scope 3 by 1,120 tons of CO2<\/sub> in 2024,\u201d reports Andreas Steen\u00adbock. He is able to quan\u00adtify this amount so precisely through a calcu\u00adla\u00adtion tool used at Stein\u00adbeis Papier. It tracks Scope 3 emis\u00adsions nearly to the day: The quan\u00adtity of a partic\u00adu\u00adlar prod\u00aduct purchased is assigned an emis\u00adsions factor deter\u00admined by exter\u00adnal sustain\u00adabil\u00adity experts. Evonik manager Batz-Sohn is impressed by this system: \u201cStein\u00adbeis Papier is one of our major customers and is one of the first to have estab\u00adlished such a track\u00ading system. Stein\u00adbeis assigns sustain\u00adabil\u00adity a concrete and trace\u00adable value. All the better that our certifi\u00adcates have a posi\u00adtive impact on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

As more and more emis\u00adsions are reduced from Evonik\u2019s hydro\u00adgen perox\u00adide produc\u00adtion, so does the propor\u00adtion of emis\u00adsions also decline in Stein\u00adbeis Papier\u2019s recy\u00adcled paper. A posi\u00adtive effect for Andreas Steen\u00adbock: \u201cFor us, it was crucial that T\u00dcV Rhein\u00adland inde\u00adpen\u00addently assess and vali\u00addate the \u2018Way to GO2<\/sub>\u2032 certifi\u00adcates. This allows us to keep cred\u00adi\u00adble docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion in our system and main\u00adtain trans\u00adparency in our presen\u00adta\u00adtion. This is much more bene\u00adfi\u00adcial for both ourselves and for the envi\u00adron\u00adment than unsub\u00adstan\u00adti\u00adated claims, which could be vulner\u00ada\u00adble to accu\u00adsa\u00adtions of greenwashing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, Evonik Active Oxygens has proven a trusted part\u00adner for Stein\u00adbeis Papier\u2019s high stan\u00addards: In 2024, Stein\u00adbeis Papier gave Evonik its very top rating in a general supplier eval\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion. This rank\u00ading was due in part to prod\u00aduct and service qual\u00adity as well as compli\u00adance with envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal require\u00adments. With this rating comes the expec\u00adta\u00adtion of contin\u00adued collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion on ongo\u00ading improve\u00adments for a sustain\u00adable, circu\u00adlar economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speak\u00ading of clos\u00ading a circle: At the site in Marl, Germany, Evonik also uses the high-qual\u00adity print\u00ading and copy\u00ading papers from Stein\u00adbeis. \u201cThe value chain is not always only linear, and some\u00adtimes a customer is also a supplier,\u201d says Batz-Sohn. \u201cThus, a sustain\u00adabil\u00adity gain for one is a gain for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
