Satel\u00adlites account for most traf\u00adfic in space: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/resources\/satellite-database\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">almost 5,000 of them<\/a> are currently on active service in orbit. Most satel\u00adlites are on a&nbsp;low Earth orbit trajec\u00adtory. This so-called \u201cLow Earth Orbit\u201d (LEO) covers an alti\u00adtude rang\u00ading from 200 to 2,000&nbsp;kilo\u00adme\u00adters. The Inter\u00adna\u00adtional Space Station (ISS), itself a&nbsp;satellite, orbits the Earth at an alti\u00adtude of 400&nbsp;kilo\u00adme\u00adters, for exam\u00adple. The data collected by satel\u00adlites helps farm\u00aders gain insights into the condi\u00adtion of soil and plants. With the aid of such infor\u00adma\u00adtion, they can save water, energy and seed\u00ading mate\u00adr\u00adial, as well as deter\u00admine opti\u00admum sowing and harvest\u00ading dates. This enables farm\u00aders to make the most of their poten\u00adtial yields as well as farm more effi\u00adciently and with less impact on resources. Many other sectors of manu\u00adfac\u00adtur\u00ading and process\u00ading indus\u00adtry are increas\u00adingly oper\u00adat\u00ading in a&nbsp;data-based, inter\u00adlinked manner. On the basis of such data, it is possi\u00adble to assess the extent of climate change and develop adap\u00adtive strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Satel\u00adlites are thus making life on Earth much easier and more effi\u00adcient. There is a&nbsp;marked trend toward minia\u00adtur\u00adiza\u00adtion, fueled by tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal progress and the urge for increas\u00adingly faster commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion. Increas\u00adingly more and increas\u00adingly smaller satel\u00adlites are being launched into space. \u201cThe market is very active. By 2030, an esti\u00admated 1700 satel\u00adlites will be launched per annum, compared to just 230 per annum during the last decade,\u201d says Kunkel. \u201cAnd the situ\u00ada\u00adtion is evolv\u00ading at light\u00adning speed. Satel\u00adlites used to be bigger than cars. Satel\u00adlites in LEO, i.e. in low orbit, are also easier to replace. \u201cLife\u00adcy\u00adcles are getting shorter. They are replaced after just one or two years,\u201d says Kunkel. And what happens to satel\u00adlites that are no longer required? \u201cThe decom\u00admis\u00adsioned satel\u00adlites fly in a&nbsp;very low orbit.
